The Parasail Safety Council responds to Parasail operators and organizations who opposed Florida parasail safety bill SB 392 which was designed to save lives without presenting a substitute performed a disservice to the industry and displayed a lack of leadership and professionalism.

An Open Letter to The Parasail Industry. What is leadership?

ORLANDO, FL - A piece of historical legislation which would have set the standard for safety in parasailing has been derailed thanks in  part to a small vocal group of commercial parasail operators who aside from claiming that they could not comply with Florida SB 392 because of additional investments in safety equipment, increased operating costs and made broad statements to a senate subcommittee that the USCG and FAA regulated parasailing and therefore there was no need for the state’s involvement.  Nothing could be further from the truth.   Moreover, their actions and misleading diatribe was disrespectful to the families who’s loved ones have died parasailing and who collectively supported the original Bill which included the addition of safety equipment.

Opposing safety regulations without a putting forth a substitute that could save lives is a disservice.  These same organizations circulated an FAA Memorandum and held it out as the document which if true would have an industry-wide impact.  Before being distributed, the document and its contents were not publicly analyzed or questioned by parasail organizations  who claim to be industry advocates. Nor were their disclaimers to that effect. It was taken for face value despite containing glaring errors and omissions.

These are not the actions of leadership which requires effort, integrity, knowledge and vision,  but of a follower; unconcerned about what the document said,  but about its news worthiness.  This is less than serious or sincere act that displays a lack of responsibility and professionalism .

In my opinion,  the "original" State of Florida parasail bill SB392 that would have save lives and prevented future parasailing fatalities despite misinformation to the contrary.
