ORLANDO, FL - The Parasail Safety Council announced today that it has endorsed  a passive "self-deploying" towbar "harness release device" ("HRD") after having successfully passed  rigorous reliability and performance tests. The new device separates the harnessed parasailor(s) attached to the passenger towbar from the parasail canopy automatically if dragged backwards through water thereby preventing drowning.

As an alternative to the HRD it is rumored that , a non-harness gondola style passenger support system called the  Skyrider is being re-introduced to the US market after patent licensing issues forced it to move  overseas.

Skyrider  has  apparently logged more than 7 million accident free rides since its introduction in 1985. The Skyrider is the first and only support system  which in addition providing easy evacuation during a water landing with minimal instruction, provides passenger impact protection, comfort and operational efficiency. According to personnel at SailPoint,  Skyrider's availability date is yet to be announced.

Commercial operators may apply for a PSC Safety Grant to obtain a quick release system as they becomes available.

The grant requires that the quick release be used by an operator who agrees to comply with the Parasail Safety Council Guidelines (PSCG) effective January 1, 2012.  Grants are available to US based commercial parasail operators only.
